With New Flagship Galaxy S8, Samsung Hopes To Put The Note7 Debacle Behind It

Samsung faced some very choppy waters in 2016 after its newly launched flagship phone, the Galaxy Note7, had to be discontinued because of reports by users that overheated batteries were causing the phones to spontaneously combust. Now, the world's leading smartphone manufacturer aims to make a strong comeback in 2017 with its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8.

Samsung has confirmed the new phone's name, as it has filed an application in the US trademark office. While the official specifications and designs are still unknown, there have been enough leaks in the media to provide a glimpse of what will be on offer.

The biggest change is going to be in the phone's design. With Xiaomi's Mi Mix phone showcasing an incredible 91.3 percent screen-to-body ratio, Samsung is also aiming for a bezel-less screen (i.e. a screen with a practically invisible frame on the surface) with over 90 percent screen-to-body ratio.

According to the Investor, the phone maker is doing away with the famed home screen button and building the fingerprint scanning tech into the screen using optical sensors. It is unlikely that Samsung will opt for a 4K display, but it will certainly improve the resolution and pixel density with a better colour gamut (displaying a wider colour range) support.

While it was rumored that Samsung will follow Apple and Moto's suit and remove the headphone jack in its new phone, latest leaks reveal that the 3.5 mm jack is safe for now. Although, in an interesting development, the company seems to have adopted the USB C port instead of the MicroUSB.

The Galaxy S8 will use the Snapdragon 835 or Exonys 8895 processor, both made with 10 nm FinFET technology, along with 6 or 8 GB RAM capacity. The phone's battery size is expected to be around 4,000 mAh.

While there were expectations that the new device would be unveiled during the Mobile World Congress being held in Barcelona next month, it is likely that Samsung will hold another event to launch its flagship. A leak by the online tipster, Ricciolo, suggests that Samsung Galaxy S8 will be launched on 29 March.

One of Galaxy S8's key features on the software side would be Samsung's brand new keenly awaited AI assistant, Bixby.
