A 30-year-old women in Pune set herself on fire and committed suicide after being humiliated over a ₹10 currency note.

Sundaramma Prashuram Shelar, whose husband is a casual labourer, had given the money to her son Rahul and sent him to the local grocer's in the Janawadi area. On his way, he was accosted by their neighbour's 12-year-old daughter, who mischievously snatched the note from him. When Rahul went back to complain to his mother, Sundaramma confronted her neighbours, who verbally abused her, assaulted her and even threatened to kill her.

Insulted for being treated in this way before the entire neighbourhood, Sundaramma went home, poured diesel on herself and set herself ablaze. She later died of severe burns in the hospital.

The girl, who is accused of setting off the row, has been detained by the police, while her parents, who abetted the suicide, have been arrested.
