Cabinet Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad Goofs Up With Agricultural Produce Figures, Twitter Pounces On Him

Ouch.
@vidyut / Twitter

On Sunday, Cabinet Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad -- who holds the important Law and Justice, and Information Technology portfolios -- took to Twitter to share the success of the e-NAM (National Agricultural Market) platform, a portal launched by Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare to help farmers.

Among other things, the portal's services include information on commodity arrivals and prices, buy and sell trade offers, and provision to respond to trade offers.

While his intentions were all good and aimed at boosting the success of the Digital India campaign by highlighting the large volume of transactions that have taken place on e-NAM, the minister goofed up with the agricultural produce amount.

Twitter obviously had a field day correcting him and asking him to get his math right.

The minister later deleted the tweet. Here's the screenshot.

Dear @rsprasad, the math doesn't quite add up. Did the farmers sell crops for Rs 54000+/kg on an average? Jumla, hai jumla.

@rsprasad

6.13 lakhs/1.13 lakhs = 54247 rupees per KG.

When you say agricultural produce, do you mean marijuana ?

At normal rates, we would have heard of the 40% rise in farmer suicides https://t.co/rYFmH3a8j3

Not sure these are accidents. Lots of bogus news going around. Promote, then delete. Rest happens on WhatsApp, etc. https://t.co/RL8iJjqi2t

Prasad posted a new tweet stating the correct figures.

He wrote:

"Corrections in eNAM growth figures! So far 31.13lakh tonnes of agriculture produce of Rs.6130Cr. have been transacted on eNAM."
