Headed for a split?

Loud protests broke out outside the residence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's residence late Friday following his expulsion from the Samajwadi Party by his father and party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Akhilesh Yadav urged the UP Police chief to ensure adequate security outside Mulayam Singh Yadav and Shivpal Yadav's residence. He reportedly asked a few party leaders to calm the protestors, assuring them he would meet with them on Saturday.

Mulayam Singh Yadav expelled Akhilesh Yadav for six years from the SP party late Friday at a press briefing citing "gross indiscipline." He also suspended Samajwadi Party general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav from the party for six years, in a move that is set to throw the state into political chaos ahead of the crucial assembly polls.

He had earlier issued a showcause notice to Akhilesh Yadav for issuing a separate list of candidates for UP Polls. A showcause notice was also issued to Ram Gopal Yadav for making anti-party statements.

Ram Gopal has called his expulsion "unconstitutional" and maintains he is still the general secretary of the party. He said the move was not legitimate as it came just hours after a show-cause notice was issued o him. Ram Gopal Yadav had earlier called an emergency meeting of Samajwadi Party representatives on January 1.

Earlier Mulayam Singh Yadav had called a meeting of all the candidates who were given tickets, even as Akhilesh Yadav met the SP core group at his residence on a day the party faced the possibility of a split. This comes a day after the younger Yadav circulated his own list of 235 candidates for the Assembly elections.

Shivpal Yadav who has sided with Mulayam, met the elder Yadav at his residence today but did not answer questions of reporters waiting outside. There's a meeting tomorrow of the 393 candidates who have been allotted tickets by him, PTI reported.
