Apple is very keen on manufacturing iPhones in India and towards that end it is seeking several relaxations in norms from the Indian government. According to a report in the Economic Times, the company wants the authorities to relax some labeling rules for it.

The Cupertino, California-based smartphone giant is also known for its secrecy and discreetness when it comes to its products. The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has sent Apple's request for approval to the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeITY).

Apple has also sought relaxation in taxation from the finance ministry based on claims of bringing 'cutting edge technology' to India.

Earlier this year, Apple had submitted an application to open its own branded stores in India but the government rejected it, citing the 30 percent sourcing norms. However, it was reported that after CEO Tim Cook's visit, the government was reconsidering the application by easing norms for 2-3 years for the company.

The iPhone is currently produced in six countries worldwide with China being the biggest manufacturer. After some skepticism, Apple is now finally paying attention to India.

"Looking ahead, we're seeing some very exciting developments in India," Cook said during Apple's last earnings call. "Reliance Jio is rolling out a first of its kind all-IP network in India with 4G coverage in 18,000 cities and 200,000 villages across the country. They're offering a free year of service to purchasers of new iPhones and we're partnering with them to ensure great iPhone performance on their network."

While many smartphone manufacturers are making inroads in India by producing devices locally, a premium brand such as Apple would be a huge coup for the country.
