Citing senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, The Economic Timesreported today that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to make a major announcement at a BJP rally in Lucknow on 2 January in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh.
The expected announcement is geared towards easing demonetisation blues. When scrapping the ₹500 and ₹1000 notes on 8 November, Modi had asked the public to bear with the hardships that would follow this massive exercise. He said that sacrifices were necessary to combat black money and corruption. Modi had asked people to be patient until 30 December.
ET described the expected announcement on 2 January as a "headline-grabbing policy move aimed at generating feel-good after the 50-day 'trial' period of demonetisation gets over on December 30."
The UP Assembly election is critical for the BJP, which swept India's most populous state in the 2014 Lok Sabha election, and is once again banking on Modi to lead it victory. So far, BJP leaders in UP have touted the surgical strikes against Pakistan and the fight against black money as Modi's big achievements.
