A Grown-Ass Politician Tried To Run Away With The Speaker's Ceremonial Mace While Assembly Was In Session

It was quite a-macing (sorry).

Let's just say, it got quite macy. A bizarre scene played out at the Tripura legislative assembly on Tuesday as disgruntled Trinamool Congress legislator Sudip Roy Barman, who was protesting against a sex scandal allegedly involving Forests Minister Naresh Jamatia, suddenly grabbed the Speaker's ceremonial mace and made a mad dash for the doors.

Barman accused Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath of refusing to allow a discussion on the sex scandal. Interestingly, this is not the first time that the Speaker's grand ceremonial mace has come under attack. The thing's been misplaced, stolen or manhandled at least five times, Times of India reported.

The proceedings of the House were stalled as Barman ran towards the door, mace in hand with a marshal in hot pursuit. He reportedly pulled the stunt to draw the Speaker's attention. Needless to say, he succeeded.

Congress and the TMC, who have sought Jamatia's expulsion from the cabinet for his alleged involvement in the sex scandal, had trooped into the Well of the House after the Question Hour, when the strange incident happened.

"Barman raised a womanising issue during Zero Hour without any prior notice. Then the opposition members came to the well of the house and started shouting slogans. Suddenly, Barman ran out of the house with the mace. He should not have done it," the Speaker was quoted as saying by IANS.

"I am ashamed. Roy Barman is a senior member of the house. What message has he given to his juniors? " Debnath told the Times of India.

Last reported, the mace was reunited with its rightful owner.
