Crime Patrol Actor Caught With ₹43 Lakh In Car Claims He Heads An Anti Corruption Society

Madhya Pradesh-based actor Rahul Chelani, who is often seen in the Hindi TV show Crime Patrol, was on Thursday detained by the police in the Hoshangabad district with Rs 43 lakh on him in new currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2000.

While reports last night said the 'President of Anti-Corruption Society' was caught, more investigation revealed that Chelani was an actor, and there was no confirmation that he was actually the president of such a society. Chelani however claimed that the society was registered in Kolkata.

The car was stopped at a signal in Hoshangabad and the three occupants Rahul, his relative Kapil Chelani and driver Brajesh Choure were detained after the police checked the car.

The Telegraph reports that it was a routine check and the police had no prior knowledge about this. The police also said Chelani had at first panicked and had asked the driver to speed off.

Clearly that did not happen.

The Indian Express also reported that the three occupant of the car refused to cooperate when they were asked to step out of the car.

The report suggests that not only did they try to bribe the police, Chelani claimed that he had received the money for his work in another TV serial Savdhaan India.

The Telegraph quotes inspector Mahendra Chouhan of the Kotwali police station as saying, "Rahul said at one point the money was payment for acting while Kapil claimed it was the proceeds from a property sale. Kapil said the money had been exchanged from old notes at a bank. Rahul further said that he was going to his maternal uncle's home to keep the money in safe custody. We have informed the income-tax department and seized the money."

While Chelani claimed that he was going to Hoshangabad, a police officer who was part of the team that question him told The Hindustan Timesthat the car was going towards Bhopal and not Hoshangabad.

Reports suggest that the Madhya Pradesh police have heightened vigilance and checks in recent times.
