It would have been a routine call between one world leader and another recently-elected one. But in this case, it was President-elect of the USA Donald Trump speaking with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. On Wednesday afternoon, when the Pakistani PM called Trump, the conversation was hardly typical.

While Sharif stuck to the usual practice of congratulating the newly-elected leader, and extending an invitation to Pakistan, Trump was more than his usual colourful self. While he called Sharif "a terrific guy" and claimed he felt he had known the PM for ages, he called the Pakistani people "one of the most intelligent".

When invited to Pakistan, Trump said, he would "love to come to a fantastic country, fantastic place of fantastic people." Last year, around this time, Trump had asked for a "complete ban" on Muslims entering the United States and promised he would enact this if he was made President.

While it is unclear these are his exact quotes during the telephonic conversation, the manner of speaking is distinctly Trump's style.

Full transcript of the conversation of 30 November, 2016:

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif called President-elect USA Donald Trump and felicitated him on his victory. President Trump said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif you have a very good reputation. You are a terrific guy. You are doing amazing work which is visible in every way. I am looking forward to see you soon. As I am talking to you Prime Minister, I feel I am talking to a person I have known for long. Your country is amazing with tremendous opportunities. Pakistanis are one of the most intelligent people. I am ready and willing to play any role that you want me to play to address and find solutions to the outstanding problems. It will be an honor and I will personally do it.
