External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is currently undergoing treatment for kidney failure, has been receiving scores of offers from people who want to donate one of their kidneys to her.

According to a report in the Indian Express, the phones at Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where Swaraj has been admitted, have been ringing with offers from strangers willing to be donors.

A hospital official told IE that while most phone calls came from the Hindi-speaking belt, there were also several calls from Tamil Nadu. The official said that they had received around 40-45 phone calls from prospective donors.

One of them is Gaurav Dangi, a traffic constable from Bhopal.

"I came to know about her health through newspapers," Dangi told ANI. "If my blood group will match then I am ready to give my kidney to Sushma-ji. I have also made an offer through Twitter."

Asked why he was willing to make the sacrifice, Dangi said, "Sushma ji is a good leader and we need her to be well and that is why I offered my kidney."

The traffic constable added that his decision was purely personal and he did not have any political links with Swaraj.

Swaraj, naturally, is touched by the selfless gestures of so many and expressed her gratitude to them.

The 64-year-old tweeted:

She also tweeted cheerfully about her recovery:

Swaraj was admitted to the hospital on 7 November and was to undergo an endocrinological test. She was put on dialysis on Tuesday and is currently undergoing tests for a kidney transplant.
