People queue to deposit or exchange their old high denomination banknotes outside a bank.

Like many others in the country, 50-year-old Nirmala Devi was waiting in the queue outside a branch of Punjab National Bank in Gurgaon on Thursday, waiting to deposit her savings in now scrapped ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes.

She was standing towards the queue's tail end, when a man came to her, said something and before she could respond, snatched the cloth bag she was carrying and fled.

She was robbed of Rs 1.83 lakh, reports Indian Express.

"Ours is a joint family, and I had come with the cash saved up by everyone to deposit it in our account, and also exchange some of the invalid currency for valid notes," the 50-year-old told IE.

Devi told Times Of India that nobody even came forward to help her, fearing they would lose their place in the queue.

"I have lost all my savings. I was shocked to see that when I raised the alarm, nobody came forward to help me," the woman wrote in her police complaint.

A case has been registered regarding the incident and police is investigating the CCTV footage.
