At a time when many are struggling to just survive in the wake of the demonetisation of ₹500 and ₹1,000 currency notes, mining baron and former BJP Minister, Gali Janardhan Reddy, has come under the Income-Tax department's scanner for his daughter's grand wedding preparations, with costs reportedly running into hundreds of crores of rupees.

Reddy, whose daughter Brahmani will marry a businessman from Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, has built many elaborate structures including a model palace, for the ceremony in Bengaluru.

The invitation for the wedding made news some weeks ago as it was in the form of a box with an LCD screen on the inside that auto-played a music video featuring Reddy and his family once the box was opened.

According to reports, Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan is expected to perform at the wedding, along with Katrina Kaif and many Tollywood actors.

Karnataka's Health Minister Ramesh Kumar has criticised the extravagant wedding programme at a time when so many are facing a crisis, and said that he will not attend it.

One of India's richest men, Janardhan Reddy was implicated in large-scale illegal mining and irregularities in allotment of mining leases in the Bellary Reserve Forest area in Andhra Pradesh.

He was released on conditional bail in January 2015 by the Supreme Court.
