SURAT -- Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Kanu Gandhi passed away on Monday in Surat after prolonged illness.

The 87-year-old Kanu was admitted to a charitable hospitable in Surat in a critical condition with little financial support.

On May 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to Kanu to enquire about his health.

On his direction, Union Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma had even met Kanu and assured all possible help.

A former NASA scientist, Kanu was the energetic little boy who led his grandfather, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi holding his stick on the beaches of Gujarat's Dandi village during the historic Salt Satyagraha of March-April 1930.

The picture has been etched in public memory for over eight decades and even immortalised in memorials on the Salt Satyagraha at Mumbai's Juhu Beach and several other parts of the country.
