A football team comprising students of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi showcased support for their missing college-mate Najeeb Ahmad in a special way on Sunday.

At the smog-filled grounds of the Delhi Kannada Senior Secondary School, the JNU football team, named Red Star, pasted stickers that said, "Najeeb" on their jerseys in a show of solidarity, said a report in The Telegraph.

Ahmed went missing on the intervening night of 14-15 October after allegedly being beaten up and injured by a group of students belonging to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Muhammed Haneefa, a PhD scholar in sociology at JNU and the captain of Red Star said:

"The crowd started shouting 'one goal for Najeeb' after we spoke to them on the subject during the break. After the tournament, other teams wanted to join us at the vigil at India Gate, but by then everyone there had already been detained."

A couple of weeks ago, members of the Indian cricket team were seen wearing their mothers' names on the back of their jerseys during the fifth-ODI against New Zealand. The gesture was their way of showing respect to women and mothers all over the world.
