An abandoned bag containing a local pistol, seven cartridges and a screw-driver was found in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus on Sunday night, according to media reports. This comes amidst the tense situation prevailing at JNU following the disappearance of Najeeb Ahmed, a student at the university.

The recovery of the bag and its contents assume greater significance in the context of the ongoing protests by JNU students over Ahmad's disappearance, and the vitiated atmosphere on campus.

The bag was discovered by security guards patrolling the area near the campus' north gate. The police was informed immediately and a case registered under the Arms Act, reported ANI.

An investigation has been launched.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police has launched a manhunt to trace Ahmed, whose disappearance has become a political issue.

Ahmed went missing on the intervening night of 14-15 October after allegedly being beaten up and injured by a group of 20 students belonging to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
