Xiaomi's New Mi Mix Concept Phone Is A Design Marvel

The bezel-less beauty!
Xiaomi

Xiaomi has made its share of phones in the past couple of years, but nothing as stunning as the Mi Mix it unveiled today. While we have seen plenty of bezel-less phones in pictures and concepts, Xiaomi has actually made one. (A bezel is the hard rim of metal, plastic or any other material that frames the phone screen.)

Mi Mix has a stunning 91.3 percent screen to body ratio which means its front surface is practically fully covered by the 6.4-inch display screen.

Xiaomi has been able to do this thanks to some high-level innovating. Traditional smartphones have an earpiece and a proximity sensor on the top part of the bezel. But Xiaomi has taken a very different approach by using ceramic acoustic technology that allows you to take calls without an ear piece.

Called the Cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology, it essentially involves converting digital signals to mechanical energy through ceramic material. The mechanical energy in turn relies on the phone's metal frame to generate sound.

Another piece missing from the phone's top part is the good old proximity sensor that determines how far your face is from the phone. Instead of using infrared technology, Xiaomi is relying on ultrasonic sound to provide that information to the phone.

Complementing these changes, the front camera has been moved to the bottom bezel. Now you can take upside down selfies too. Crazy, right?

In the rest of its specifications, Mi Mix matches the other flagship phones released this year. It runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor with 6 GB of RAM, and has an impressive 256 GB internal storage capacity. There is also a lower-end variant with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage.

The price for the two variants are RMB 3,999 (approx. ₹39,459) and RMB 3,499 (approx. ₹34,525) respectively.

The phones 16 MP rear camera comes with Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF), and its 4400 mAh capacity battery has Qualcomm 3.0 fast charging support.

For a more premium feel, the rims of the rear camera and fingerprint sensor in the higher end version of Mi Mix have been bejeweled by 18K gold rings, and the volume and the power buttons are made of ceramic. This premium model comes in luxurious packaging.

Mi Mix will only be available in China as of now. The phone will go on sale from 4 November and, initially, the sales will be restricted to a few thousand units only.
