As the rift in the Yadav family is growing wider, the layers of bitter feelings are surfacing up and into the public eye.

At the Samajwadi Party meeting on Monday, things ended on an ugly note, when the party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav yelled at his son and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, asking him, "Tumhari haisiyat kya hai? (Who are you to say such things [against Shivpal Yadav, Amar Singh]?)"

Mulayam's brother Shivpal Yadav, who is at daggers drawn with the chief minister over a host of issues, said he was ready to vow that the UP chief minister had talked to him about floating a new party.

At the meeting, Shivpal and Akhilesh traded charges at each other on dais, with supporters cheering and jeering the leaders in turn. Amid the commotion, Shivpal snatched the mike from the chief minister and called him a liar.

Snubbing Akhilesh's supporters, Shivpal said the party has been strengthened through the hard work and sweat of Mulayam Singh and not "because of your [Akhilesh's] sloganeering".

Mulayam put up a strong defense of his brother, who was sacked by Akhilesh on Sunday from his cabinet, and of General Secretary Amar Singh, but ruled out replacing the chief minister, who offered to quit.
