Village 'Punishes' Muslim Woman For Infidelity, Forces Husband To Shave Her Head

In a Bengali version of the infamous Khap panchayat, a Salisha Sabha in West Bengal's Murshidabad district forced a Muslim man to shave his wife's head in public, because she was allegedly having an affair with another man. The cruel punishment was imposed as the woman and her husband's family were unable to pay a 'penalty' of ₹6,000.

According to a report in The Indian Express, members of the Salisha Sabha also dragged Mariam Bibi, the woman accused of infidelity, out of her house and made the villagers watch the 'punishment' being meted out.

Reportedly, when her husband, Mizarul Sheikh, protested, the villagers thrashed him and made him shave his wife's head instead.

NewsX reported that Mariam, who has been married to Mizarul for over 14 years, had ran away with her alleged lover. But she returned to her husband when the lover refused to make their relationship official. She reportedly even told the truth to her husband, who accepted her back.

The police has arrested four people in connection with the incident.
