Three people were killed during a stampede causing a ruckus at Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati's rally in Lucknow on Sunday. Over 13 persons were also injured during the ruckus.
Historically, the biggest terrorism incidents in India that involve Pakistan, happen in November and December. This festive season, the threat perception is higher than usual. India's big cities and 22 airports have been put on high alert, even as the media, the ruling party and online warriors are claiming a victory on Pakistan. 10 days after a cross-LoC military raid, India is no safer. If anything, the threat perception is even higher. Because there have already been three terrorist attacks in Kashmir within ten days of the surgical strike.
As Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa continues to be under observation and treated for lung decongestion, the feeling that the state is also slipping into an ICU-like situation, is developing. Not that the systems have broken down or there is an issue of law and order. But Tamil Nadu is in the peculiar situation of having a CM who is hospitalised for more than two weeks now, with no interim CM and an acting Governor in Vidyasagar Rao (who is Governor of Maharashtra). Opinion on the street is that this is not the recipe for good governance.
Shortly into Sunday night's wildly anticipated US Presidential debate, Donald Trump made a campaign promise that might be more fitting in Vladimir Putin's Russia than modern American politics: If he were president, he told Hillary Clinton, "you'd be in jail". It was part of a performance from Trump that put to rest the question, if it was still open, of whether Trump is fit for the presidency. Nobody appeared more aware of that reality than Trump, whose strategy seemed to be to extract as much public humiliation from Clinton as he could, rather than to win the election.
Gunshots were heard coming from government building in Pampore, Jammu and Kashmir on Monday morning. Smoke was seen coming out of the EDI campus situated on the outskirts of Srinagar. Pampore is the site of the encounter in February where three Army para commandos were killed. Three terrorists were also killed in that 48-hour gun battle.
Reliance Jio on Sunday claimed that it had created 'a world record' by crossing the 16 million subscriber mark in its first month of operations, September. Jio, whose controversial entry into the world's second-largest telephony market sparked off a tariff war, had on boarded 1.5 million users on its 4G network during the test phase.
A FIR has been filed against the parents of a 13-year-old girl in Hyderabad who died after observing a ritual fast for 68 days. Aradhana, who kept the 'chaturmas', a traditional fast among Jains, in the hope that it would revive her family's dwindling jewellery business, died of a cardiac arrest two days after she broke it. The Class VII student of Saint Francis and resident of Pot Bazaar area in Secunderabad stopped going to school to sit for the fast. She was hailed as bal tapasvi after her death and celebrated by her community.
Indian businessman Balwinder Sahani paid $9 million for a Dubai license plate for one of his Rolls Royces. Plate 'D5' was sold at a government auction on Saturday. Sahani, who owns a property management company, also purchased another plate for 1 million dirhams.
Kashmiri youth on Sunday rescued a soldier who was trapped inside a mangled vehicle which had met an accident in Srinagar, police said. An army vehicle veered off the road after the driver lost control at Lasjan and hit a tree, a police official said. He said one soldier was trapped inside the badly damaged vehicle and efforts of other army men to evacuate him did not fructify.
The opportunity costs of vast tracts of unproductive state-owned land are significant, says an editorial in Mint. "Disposing of surplus government land is not easy. Lack of adequate land records and the absence of a single comprehensive land database, opposition from trade unions, illegal encroachment and lack of coordination between various ministries are all major issues. PSUs themselves are often in the dark as to the extent and nature of their holdings. Many of the steps involved in the monetisation of PSU land—such as identification of surplus land and approval from the relevant ministries—are lengthy and cumbersome," it says.
India has won the battle against militants and terror outfits from Pakistan. But it now confronts a far graver problem of winning over the youth of Kashmir, writes MK Narayanan in The Indian Express."Using force of the kind employed against the Lashkar, Jaish and Hizbul against today's 10 and 12-year-old schoolchildren would only inflame passions further. India has decisively won the battle against the foreign-based militants and terror outfits from Pakistan, but it now confronts a far graver problem of winning over the youth of Kashmir before an entire generation gets detached from India, a most frightening prospect," it says.
