In a shocking incident reported from a village in Punjab's Patiala district, a 100-year-old woman was murdered and possibly raped on Monday.

According to reports, the victim's body was found at her home in Daub Kalan village, 15 km from Patiala, in the early hours of Monday in a half-stripped state along with serious head injuries.

The family of the victim suspects that she was raped before being killed.

"She was lying half-naked on the cot with blood all over her mattress. We trailed the blood stains and found her clothes from a nearby field," the Hindustan Times quoted the deceased's grandson as saying.

Initial investigations suggest the involvement of drug addicts.

A case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Patiala Sadar police station.

"We have requested for a post-mortem examination to ascertain if the woman was raped," Superintendent of Police, Harvinder Singh Virk said.
