In a sickening incident, a 90-year-old woman, who is also a cancer patient, was raped at knife-point in Kerala's Kollam area on 14 September.

According to reports, the victim, a widow, has been living alone since the death of her husband and has no children.

The woman alleged that the accused knew the layout of the house.

"The accused entered my house through the back door. This can be done only by someone who knows the house well," India Today quoted the victim as saying.

"I pleaded with him not to harm me but he did not listen... I want the police to arrest the accused," she added.

According to a report in the Hindustan Times, relatives and neighbours allegedly asked the victim to keep quiet about the incident and not report it to the police. The area panchayat also ignored her complaint, the victim alleged.

After a local social worker alerted the police about the crime, the victim was taken for a medical examination, where doctors confirmed sexual assault.

A case under under IPC sections 377 and 354 has been booked.

"We have recorded the victim's statement and identified the accused. We will also book those who tried to hush up the case and denied her treatment," Kollam rural SP, Ajitha Begum, was quoted as saying,
