No matter how hard we try, we can't contest the fact that the first impression is the last impression. While some aspect of your first impression rides on your personality, a majority of it rides on your sense of style. Like Oscar Wilde once said, "You can never be overdressed or overeducated." Thus, whenever you step out, it's important to put your best foot forward, preferably in a pair of nice wrinkle-free chinos!
Caring about your style or your fashion sense may seem like a very superficial exercise to indulge in, but think about it, we admire people who are well-dressed. Be it the pop stars we idealise or movie actors we love, it's their sense of dressing that sticks with us. Even if we deny it, we too, to some extent, try to emulate their style. That's why we end up purchasing the exact same glasses that Johnny Depp wore on the red carpet or get a suit stitched that's very similar to what Brad Pitt wore to the Oscars.
Style is a very subjective thing. What is stylish to you might not be to the person standing next to you. Yet, it's this very subjective thing that helps us form an impression of someone. Why is it so important? And what defines being well-dressed?
This can be decoded in a very simple manner. A well-dressed man is someone who has his basics in place. Look at George Clooney. He doesn't always step out in a high-end designer tux but his casual style game is on point. Leather jackets, graphic t-shirts, polo shirts, light colour linen shorts – they all feature in his wardrobe. He experiments with his style but knows what looks good on him. That's why he can totally rock a black biker jacket just as easily as a graphic t-shirt with jeans.
Closer to home, Ranbir Kapoor, is effortlessly stylish. From military print cargo pants to sweatshirts teamed with sporty hats, he can carry off everything! Apart from their drop dead gorgeous looks, these men are voted the sexiest men alive because of the way they dress and carry themselves. Their style is individualistic and trendy but you will never see them wearing an oversized blanket on the streets of Manhattan (Yes, Lenny Kravitz, I am looking at you).
Many people reserve their fashionable side for special occasions. For instance, you will put that extra layer of mousse on your hair before a date and you will match your belt and shoes for an interview. But, why can't it be extended and made into an everyday practice? Amplify your regular work look with a trendy muffler or switch those formal pants for a pair of chinos. If nothing else, replace your bulky office briefcase for a sleek 'ruck-sack'.
You get one chance to make a first impression – so make sure it's a stylish one!
