Yesterday, Elon Musk turned heads when he said that he had a Tesla product announcement to make later in the day. And the announcement didn't disappoint. Tesla brought some upgrades to their high-end model S which made it world's fastest commercial car.
Model S P100D now accelerates 0-60 mph in just 2.5 seconds in ludicrous mode. That puts it right behind the ranks of LaFerrari and Porche 918 Spyder. However, both of those cars are not available for sale.
The company also introduced a new and long-awaited. 100 kWH battery pack. This battery pack will be applicable to both Model S and Model X. It will increase their run time in a single stretch by a significant distance. The range of Model S has now been increased from 468 km to 613 km.
Meanwhile, Model X also benefits from the battery upgrade and makes it the fastest SUV in the world with the acceleration of 0-60 in just 2.9 seconds. The range of the car now has been increased from 402 km to 465 km.
Tesla customers who have ordered P90D Ludicrous but haven't received the delivery can now upgrade to P100D for $10,000. The existing customers can also exchange the battery for $20,000. The higher cost is because of the process which would go into the recycling of the old battery.
Recently, Telsa acquired Musk's Solar solution company Solar City for $2.6 billion. Musk wanted to merge the companies so they can work towards a common goal of sustainable energy and faster transport. His vision behind this is that Solar city would supply power to Tesla in future apart from running its own solution business.
