They say when you stop looking for love, that's when it finds you. Had someone given me this spiel six months ago, I would have scorned and probably laughed at their face but today, I am that girl who goes about telling people this, because believe it or not, this is exactly what happened to me. I was just another average girl, who had given up any hopes of finding Prince Charming. After a series of failed relationships, I decided, this is it, I am not going to sit around and wait for a miracle to happen, I will take over the reins of my love life and work towards meeting new and interesting people. My routine is almost the same every day: work, home, and sometimes an occasional drink with a friend. I realised that with such a restricted routine it's difficult to meet new people. Wouldn't it be nice to meet someone who works nearby or goes to the same place for lunch as me? And thus, came the decision of downloading a dating app.
I started my experimentation by downloading Happn, a location-based dating app that uses your social media profile for information. The reason for this was simple – I am very active on social media and so are other people, thus it seemed like the perfect choice. After downloading it, I got carried away with my day-to-day life and I stopped checking the app, although I still had it on my phone ... Until, one fine day. I was standing in a queue, waiting to board my metro when I noticed this guy waiting to board the same train as me. Now, don't get me wrong – this wasn't love at first sight. I had noticed this gentleman almost every day. He took the same metro, got off at the same station and was almost always travelling at the same time as me. He was cute, had a little stubble and a man bun going. I had a crush on him since for some time now. So, that day, I decided to make a bold move and see if he's on the same dating app as mine. And voila, there he was, smiling on my phone screen, with his perfect profile picture.
I took my place in the metro, stared at my phone screen for two minutes before sending him a notification. I decided, what the heck, let me just do it. I've got nothing to lose, right? Thankfully, he responded by liking my profile and thus started the flow of conversations. We chatted for weeks on end. We would text each other all the time. Even though, most of the time we were using the same metro, we decided to talk to each other over the phone and really know each other, rather than meet and rush into things. Over the course of a few weeks, I realised that I knew everything about this guy and he knew everything about me. When the two of us were equally comfortable to meet face-to-face we met over a cup of coffee and it was the easiest and probably the best first date I have ever had. There was no awkwardness, no forced questions, everything was easy and the conversations were flowing as if we had known each other for years!
That was six months ago and today, we are still going strong. Life has a funny way of turning out, what's meant to be will be. But sometimes, just sometimes, you might have to download an app or two to ensure you don't miss out on that opportunity.
