A 40-year-old man lost his life while trying to save a cow from drowning in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen district on Sunday.

Raju Jogi, a resident of Bamhori village, noticed that a cow had fallen into an overflowing canal in front of his shop, the Times Of India reported.

When he realized that the crowd of people by the canal banks was unable to save the cow, Jogi jumped into the canal with a rope. He succeeded in saving the cow, but failed to swim across the canal himself, the police said.

His body was later recovered from the canal.

"This is also a difficult time for many who stood on the canal, as Raju struggled to hold on. A few of them attempted to help him but unfortunately he was taken away by the raging waters while the cow was rescued," TOI quoted an investigating officer as saying.

Jogi, who ran a small tea shop in the district, is survived by his wife and five children.

Earlier this month, a Dalit man drowned in the Barna river after he had jumped in it to save himself from cow vigilantes. The truck that the deceased had been driving had accidentally hit some stray cows.
