Producer Mahmood Farooqui was sentenced to 7 years in jail today.

Mahmood Farooqui, co-director of the 2010 Hindi film 'Peepli Live', has been sentenced to seven years in jail for raping an American researcher.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000, which if not paid will earn the filmmaker three additional months in his jail term, ANI reported.

Delhi's Saket Court had convicted Farooqui on July 30 for raping the 35-year-old woman.

The crime dates back to March 28, 2015.

The American woman was in India to conduct research for her doctoral thesis from Columbia University.

She moved to Delhi in June 2014 and was looking for contacts for her work in Gorakhpur. A common friend reportedly put her in touch with Farooqui.

Earlier, the court had started the trial in the case after framing charges of rape under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Farooqui.

Farooqui, who had been out on bail, was taken into custody immediately after the judgment was pronounced.

According to this NDTV report, Farooqui had invited the researcher for dinner at his house.

In its chargesheet, police said, that she reached the director's house at 9 pm and found him in an intoxicated state.

Later, he forced himself on her.

During the trial, the prosecution had said that the woman was scared after the incident.

The prosecution had sought maximum punishment of life imprisonment for Farooqui. However, his lawyer had pushed for minimum punishment of seven years rigorous imprisonment, reported Indian Express.
