NEW DELHI -- At least 10,727 were killed in traffic accidents last year because of bad road conditions like potholes, or pathways under repair, reported The Times of India. That's at least 29 deaths every day.

Worse, experts told TOI that this number is likely higher, as deaths under this category are largely underreported and poorly researched.

Despite warnings that this should be treated as a public health emergency, India still does not investigate these accidents properly, and these largely fall under categories of "self-accident" and no one is booked for the crime. Civic agencies are rarely hauled up or convicted for such accidents.

Inferior quality of road construction, their poor maintenance, illegally overloaded trucks, poor drainage systems and a general lack of apathy from civic agencies have contributed to bad roads in India, causing such accidents.
