To Recover From 'Great Grand Masti' Watch These 10 Hindi Comedy Classics

Great Grand Masti (dis)graced our screens on the 15 July and unsuspecting folks who went to watch the movie are still recovering from the experience. We completely understand if you want to give up on Indian comedy films, but we would like to remind you that this is the same industry that gave us movies such as the iconic political satire Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, buddy movie Chashme Buddoor and the unbelievably hilarious Hera Pheri.

For those who have had to endure the masti films, you know, Great Grand Masti and Mastizaade and such like, here are some films you could pick up and get some real laughs.

1. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)

Directed by Kundan Shah, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro has one of the best comedy ensemble cast ever. That includes Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Neena Gupta, Satish Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Om Puri and Satish Kaushik. The plot revolves around professional photographers Vinod and Sudhir, played by Naseeruddin Shah and Ravi Baswani, who unwittingly capture a murder being committed by the corrupt businessman-builder Tarneja, played by Pankaj Kapur. Things quickly go downhill when they try to expose Tarneja.

2. Chupke Chupke (1975)

The quintessential feel-good movie, Chupke Chupke also has a perfect ensemble cast. Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the film stars Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Asrani and Keshto Mukherjee. The plot revolves around a classic case of comedy of errors and identity crisis. Parimal Tripathi, a professor of Botany, falls in love with Sulekha. After they get married, Parimal assumes the identity of one Pyaremohan Illahabadi and gets employed as a driver with Sulekha's intellectual brother-in-law.

3. Padosan (1968)

Jyoti Swaroop's Padosan is among the most loved comedy movies of all times. Padosan stars Sunil Dutt, Saira Bano, Kishore Kumar and, of course, Mehmood in the cult role of Master Pillai. Bhola, the simpleton, played by Sunil Dutt, is in love with Bindu who is played by Saira Banu. Bindu is very close to her music teacher, Master Pillai. So, to remove Master Pillai out of the way, Bhola and his friend and mentor, Vidyapati, devise a very unique and musical plan.

4. Gol Maal (1979)

Widely regarded as one of the finest Indian comedies, Gol Maal tells the story of Ramprasad who cooks up a mustachioed twin brother to impress his employer and prospective father-in-law. But things soon get out of hand and he has to conjure up a mother as well. Gol Maal stars Amol Palekar, Dina Pathak, Deven Verma and the legendary Utpal Dutt.

5. Chashme Buddoor (1981)

This buddy flick stars Farooq Sheikh, Ravi Baswani, Rakesh Bedi, Saeed Jaffrey and Deepti Naval. Directed by Sai Paranjpye, the movie is about three friends who live together. Two of them, Omi and Jomo come across a girl, Neha and try to impress her but fail miserably. As luck would have it, Siddharth and Neha fall in love with each other. Omi and Jomo, then, decide that they have to break the couple up.

6. Hera Pheri (2000)

Five minutes into the film and you'll realise that the hype around it is justified. Hera Pheri stars Akshay Kumar, Suneil Shetty, Paresh Rawal and Tabu. The story revolves around the broke Baburao Ganpatrao Apte and his two broke tenants Raju and Shyam, played by Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar and Suneil Shetty respectively. Things swiftly turn around when Baburao mistakenly gets a call from a kidnapper who asks for ransom. Raju decides to take full advantage of the situation and places the right call to the intended person and demands double the ransom. He ropes in Shyam and Baburao in his complicated plan to extract the ransom amount, keep half of it with themselves, give the other half to the kidnappers and free the kidnapped child. Needless to add, total confusion ensues.

7. Angoor (1982)

Based on Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, Angoor stars Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma in a double role. It all begins when Raj Tilak and his wife Shammi name their twin sons Ashok. Then they adopt another set of twins and name both the kids Bahadur. But during a fateful trip, one child from each set gets separated. Years down the line, both the set of twins, now grown up, meet again and things soon get out of hand.

8. Bheja Fry (2007)

The first installment of the Bheja Fry trilogy stars the kings of comedy -- Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak and Ranvir Shorey along with Sarika and Milind Soman. Ranjeet, his wife Sheetal and their friends get together each Friday, invite "idiots" and make fun of them. They get a taste of their own medicine when they invite Bharat Bhushan, played by Vinay Pathak, over for one of their infamous parties.

9. Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006)

Dibakar Banerjee's directorial debut won the National Award for Best feature Film in Hindi in 2006. The film revolves around the Khosla family whose plot of land has been encroached by a land shark. Khosla ka Ghosla then follows the family trying to get back what's theirs. The film stars Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Parveen Dabas, Vinay Pathak, Ranveer Shorey and Tara Sharma.

10. Andaz Apna Apna (1994)

Rajkumar Santoshi's film was an average grosser when it released but gradually became a cult classic. The movie focuses on Amar and Prem, whose only aim is to marry Raveena and become wealthy. But Ranveena, who actually is Karishma, has a plan of her own up her sleeve. Chaos ensues and more when you add to the mix the great Crime Master Gogo who is also eyeing the money for himself.
