Two women allegedly committed suicide at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras on Wednesday in a span of 24 hours, several media outlets reported today.

P Maheswari, a 34-year-old research scholar, and 47-year-old Vijaya Lakshmi, the wife of a professor, were found hanging from their rooms on Wednesday, NDTV reported.

The police said that there was no suicide note in Maheswari's case and the reasons for her alleged suicide was not known immediately, The Times of India reported. Maheswari's friends told the police that she was "depressed and lonely" about her husband Pandiarajan not visiting her in the hostel, TOI reported.

Lakshmi was worried about her elder son's death, TOI reported. "We are told that she had attempted suicide earlier," a policeman told TOI.

"IIT Madras reports with deep sadness the death of a post-doctoral research scholar in the campus. The scholar's family has been informed. The institute extends its deep felt condolences to the family and the near and dear ones of the scholar for the unfortunate, untimely and devastating loss," IIT Madras said in a statement on Maheswari's death.

The institute is yet to issue a statement on Lakshmi's death.

More details are awaited.
