After the Supreme Court restored the Congress Party government to Arunachal Pradesh, Vice President Rahul Gandhi tweeted, "Thank you Supreme Court for explaining to the Prime Minister what democracy is."

For the first time ever, the Supreme Court has restored a government in a state after a new government had taken over, while ruling that the steps which led to the imposition of President's Rule by the Modi government at the Centre and the formation of the new government were "unconstitutional."

In December, rebel lawmakers from the Congress Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party met at a hotel to pass a "no confidence" motion against the government of Nabam Tuki, and later they formed a government under the dissident Congress Party leader Kalikho Pul, who led the revolt.

The Supreme Court ruled as "unconstitutional" the decision by Governor Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa to advance the assembly session in which the Congress Party government was dismissed. The Assembly session, scheduled for January, was advanced by a month, which coincided with the rebellion by 21 Congress Party leaders against Tuki.

"We have got justice from the Supreme Court, it has today saved this country and its Constitution," Tuki said today.

This is second major legal victory for the Congress Party after the Supreme Court ruled that Harish Rawat government had won the vote of confidence in the Uttarakhand Assembly, and the Centre had to withdraw President's Rule.
