In the aftermath of the tragic suicide of a 21-year-old woman from Salem in Tamil Nadu, who was distraught over morphed semi-nude photos of hers being circulated on social media, the state police is contemplating a drastic step.
According to a report in the Economic Times, the Tamil Nadu police is contemplating holding Facebook accountable for the delay in responding to the police's and parents' requests to take down the photos.
In fact, the Tamil Nadu police officials also want to charge Facebook with 'abetment to suicide' and want to include the social media behemoth in the chargesheet. They admitted that the matter will not be easy to resolve as such a case had no precedent.
Vinupriya, a third year BSc student, was being harassed by one Suresh, who worked at her father's power loom and became obsessed with her.
Reportedly, Vinupriya's suicide note suggested that her parents had doubts about whether the semi-nude photos posted of Facebook were morphed or genuine.
"What's the use of living when my father and mother do not trust me?" her suicide note read.
Her family, on the other hand, claimed that the police did not initiate any procedure on blocking or removing the morphed photos despite their repeated requests.
