Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, whose last directorial attempt was the critically and commercially successful Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, is back with his next, Mirzya, a film that is seemingly mounted on a lavish scale and whose trailer was just released online.
Mehra will be launching two new actors with Mirzya -- Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher -- both with strong lineage within the film industry. Harshvarshan is Anil Kapoor's son and Saiyami Kher is actress Tanvi Azmi's niece.
While the trailer is spectacular in terms of the visuals, not much can be said about the narrative, which looks confusing, to say the least. The film seems to be a reincarnation drama, which crosses between the early past and the present, with a sweeping love story weaved in.
According to its official synopsis, the film unfolds filled with 'heightened drama' in the visually rich terrain of Rajasthan, contrasted with flashes of the fantastical universe of the folklore set in the landscape of Ladakh.
The background score is especially striking in the trailer, a poetic tune reminiscent of epic love stories that become part of native folklore. The film itself is said to be inspired by the legendary story of Mirza-Sahiban, considered one of Punjab's most tragic romances.
Undoubtedly, the film boasts of an ensemble team. While the Rang De Basanti director is at the helm, legendary poet-writer Gulzar has written the film's screenplay and Mehra's Milkha collaborators Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have composed the music. Acclaimed polish cinematographer Pawel Dyllus has shot the film.
While these credits are certainly impressive, a lot is riding on the industry-bred newcomers, whose performances will make or break the film.
Produced by Mehra and businessman Anand Mahindra's film company Cinestaan, Mirzya will open in theaters on October 7.
