NEW DELHI -- A 24-year-old man was in for a nasty surprise when he regained consciousness after an ankle surgery in one of Delhi's best hospitals. Ravi Rai was scheduled to undergo an operation in his right leg for a fracture. When he woke up after surgery, he was horrified to find that the doctors had operated on the other ankle.

According to reports, Ravi had taken a tumble down some stairs on Sunday and was rushed to Fortis hospital in Shalimar Bagh after he complained of severe pain. Following an X-ray and CT scan, the doctors recommended a surgery that required four pins to be inserted in Ravi's ankle for support.

"They explained us the procedure and trusting their expertise we readily agreed for the surgery," Ravi's father Ram Rai told India Today. "We came to know about their grave mistake after Ravi gained consciousness."

The hospital has released a statement admitting the mistake. "Patients safety is of paramount importance to us. We are deeply concerned and will take the appropriate action," the release said.

A police case has been registered following the incident. Ravi has been shifted to another hospital for treatment.
