The Vishwa Hindu Parishad wants the Modi government to create a separate ministry dedicated to protecting cows. The Bharatiya Govansh Rakshan Samvardhan, VHP's cow protection wing, is urging the Bhartiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre, to set a deadline for creating such a ministry. The VHP reportedly wants a total ban on cow slaughter and beef consumption and is pushing lawmakers to bring up the issue during the Monsoon session of Parliament.
Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani and Bihar Education Minister Ashok Choudhary were today locked in a war of words over the latter addressing her as 'dear' on Twitter. The matter did not end there as fights on Twitter that involve celebrities never do. In an attempt to instill a sense of hygiene in the students and their families as part of the district’s open defecation free (ODF) drive, the administration in Narmada district of Gujarat has put in place a new form of roll call. When a student's name is called out by the teacher, instead of saying 'Present Sir', the student has to respond in either with 'Sauchayala chhe' (I have a toilet at home), 'Sauchayala nathi' (I don’t have a toilet at home) or 'Sauchalaya bane chhe' (toilet at home is under construction). The month-long rigorous exercise will ensure that every home in the district has a toilet as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

The conventional explanation for the diasporic jihadist, radicalisation, may not be the complete one, writes Praveen Swami in The Indian Express. "Islamism, for Omar Mateen or others, is not a religion in a conventional sense. It exists free from traditional institutions of mosque and community, free from the historical contexts which their parents’ generations brought with them from their homelands. Inside small groups, online or physical, they give their diasporic Islam meaning — and act on it to dismantle the world around them. The ultra-violence of the Islamic State, or al Qaeda provides a language for the anger of a generation alienated from the political system, with no personal or political agency. The crisis has come at a moment when traditional political parties seem disengaged from the lives of ordinary people, especially the working class," he explains.
The thriving trade in illicitly procured temple idols was exposed yet again after officers of the Idol Wing of the Tamil Nadu Police raided the premises of the Chennai-based businessman Deenadayalan on 31 May. The sheer scale of the seizure signals how big and brazen the idol-looting business is in India, says an editorial in The Hindu.
