To avenge the attack on their goats, two residents of Keezhamur village in Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu burnt alive 50 stray dogs on Sunday. The duo poisoned around 70 dogs of which 50 were then burnt alive, news reports said.

Muthu and Murugadoss, both goatkeepers, not only burnt the canines but left the carcasses on an agricultural land filling the village with the stench.

"The brothers poisoned close to 70 dogs, out of which 50 were burnt alive using kerosene," said P Ashwath, an animal activist from Chennai who answered a distress call from the residents of the village, to The New Indian Express.

According to Ashwath, he got a distressed call from one of the villagers after which he rushed to the village after four days.

Several crows, birds, and cats who fed on the carcasses too met their death, Ashwath said. The activist along with his friends buried the carcasses and ensured the infection does not spread.

"Overnight a village that had close to 100 dogs, suddenly had 15," Ashwath added.

An FIR has been filed at the Melmaruvathur police station under IPC Section 429 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
