In a landmark judgement, a Division Bench of the Bombay High Court on Monday passed the verdict in favour of Abhishek Chaubey's Udta Punjab and ordered the Pahlaj Nihalani-led CBFC to issue a fresh certificate to the producers within 48 hours. The one cut that the Division Bench led by Justice SC Dharamadhikari and Justice Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi insisted on retaining was a shot of Shahid Kapoor’s character, a rockstar named Tommy Singh, urinating in front of an audience at a concert.

Pakistan's latest bid to join the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group (NSG), a club of 48 countries that control the export of materials and equipment that could be used for making nuclear weapons, is a clear copycat phenomenon. As India is pressing ahead with its demand for an entry into the elite group, Pakistan has begun doing the same by claiming that it’s more qualified to be a non-proliferator and stickler to rules than India. Pakistan’s foreign affairs advisor Sartaj Aziz said on Sunday that for non-NPT countries, Pakistan was a better choice than India. But nobody, except China, seems to be interested.

Following the news that a prominent restaurant in New Delhi allegedly denied entry to underprivileged children who were accompanied by a woman, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia ordered an inquiry into the incident. Calling it a typical colonial mindset, Sisodia demanded a report into the matter within 24 hours.

The order came on the petition of a Jalandhar-based lawyer, who approached the court, stating that the film showed Punjab 'in bad light'.

A coaching institute in Sikar, Rajasthan gifted a sleek BMW sedan to student Tanmaya Shekhawat for securing 11th position in the IIT-Joint Entrance Exam (Advanced) that selects candidates for the top technical institutes in the country. Sikar, located around 115 kilometres from Jaipur, has been seeking to replicate the success story of Kota which is known as the 'coaching capital' of India. The shiny red German-made vehicle is worth about â‚ą27.5 lakhs and was bought by the director of the coaching institute a couple of years ago.

Opinion

They’re trolling PM Narendra Modi for LGBT rights in India because he condoled the massacre in a gay nightclub in Orlando in the US. What about Section 377, they ask. This kind of lazy whataboutery is usually the preserve of Hindutva trolls. Looks like the virus is spreading, writes Shivam Vij for HuffPost India. "What we are missing here is that those killed were gay second, human first. It is possible for Modi, or anyone — especially Muslim and Christian groups — to oppose gay rights and still condemn the massacre of gay club-goers. Nuance is the enemy of polemic. Hyperbole is easy," he says.

Renewed efforts to broker peace in the Israel-Palestine conflict will come a cropper until Israeli exceptionalism is broken, writes Stanly Johny in The Hindu. "The problem in the case of the Israel-Palestine conflict is that there’s a pro-Israel bias among the Western powers which stops them from putting real pressure on Tel Aviv to deliver... Despite criticisms even from its allies in the West, Israel’s settlement policy remains intact. Still, were there any meaningful international efforts to hold Israel accountable for its actions or to put pressure on its leaders to change their policies," he says.

Negating Babasaheb Ambedkar's contribution to the Constitution is part of a political design, writes D Raja in The Indian Express. "Ambedkar does not require any testimonial or certificate from those who are opposed to the Constitution. However, it is important to restate that it is because of Ambedkar that we have today a Constitution which defines India in terms of its diversity, secularism and plurality. Such a broad-spectrum understanding of India is anathema to the Sangh Parivar," he says.
