Lenovo's Budget Phone Vibe K5 Launched At ₹6999

Lenovo's Budget Phone Gives Off Mixed Vibes
Lenovo

Lenovo launched their budget phone Vibe K5 In India today. The phone was unveiled originally in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and will be sold in India for ₹6999. The budget phone is meant to compete with models such as Moto E and Samsung J3.

The phone comes with a couple of features that are notable for this segment, the most striking being the Dolby Atmos audio support and a 720p 5-inch screen. The other hardware features have more run of the mill specifications. It has a 2 GB RAM and runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 415 processor at 1.4 GHz.

Vibe K5 comes with a 13 MP rear sensor camera, which sounds good on paper. But, without any stabilization or advanced image processing, the camera will be an adequate shooter at best. It also has a 5 MP front camera. It offers 16 GB of internal storage, which is standard for budget phones, and comes with a 2750 mAh battery which is enough for a day's usage.

Rather disappointingly, the phone runs on Android Lolipop 5.1 and that is unlikely to be updated. It is a bit sad that smartphone makers are releasing a phone with a two-year-old software when, on the other hand, we are so close to the Android N release.

The launch of Vibe K5 comes on the back of the Lenovo Tech World event, where the highlight was the launch of the Lenovo-owned Motorola's flagship Z line. Motorola launched two modular phones Moto Z and Moto Z Force. and, Lenovo showed off a bunch of gadgets and gizmos. This included a project tango enabled phone and a bendable phone, a smart bracelet, 3D printed smart shoes developed in collaboration with Intel, and a smart dock concept.

The Vibe K5 can prove to be a good seller for Lenovo, if the hardware delivers and it performs well. Lately, Lava and Reliance Jio have released a bunch of phones in this segment and with Jio doing well in the smartphone market, coupled with its 4G connectivity advantage, Lenovo has its work cut out if it wants decent sales figures.

Lenovo is holding a flash sale for the phone on 22 June, another strategy that need not necessarily work. Registrations have begun.
