Staring at an identity crisis after being washed out of the recently concluded assembly elections in four states, the Indian National Congress is likely to field Priyanka Gandhi as its chief ministerial candidate in Uttar Pradesh, according to news reports.

Although the Gandhi scion has so far resisted the temptation to enter active politics, news reports said there was a greater force being mobilised within the party to bring in Priyanka as the party’s face in upcoming assembly elections in UP.

Prashant Kishor, the high profile strategist roped in by the party, has suggested that Priyanka should be called upon if the party wants to undergo an image makeover.

Being called the Brahmastra of the party, Priyanka is likely to be seen campaigning hard in the UP elections and will be given a bigger role in the 2019 union elections.

Calling the decision more personal than political, sources told Tehelka that the continuous attack on her husband Robert Vadra by the ruling party has strengthened her resolve to actively fight the battle.

According to news reports, the 44-year-old Priyanka is likely to contest from Amethi, taking head on Union HRD minister Smriti Irani. Rahul Gandhi will contest from Rae Bareli.
