Two years ago, the Aligarh Muslim University came under a lot of criticism for allegedly denying women students access to its library. The vice-chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah had said that there would be "four times more boys" in the library if girls were allowed in.

The University has once again been accused of bias against women.

According to a report in The Hindu, some women staffers of the varsity have alleged that women were barred from enrolling for most Undergraduate Courses in the main campus of AMU.

They claim that these courses were only open for men.

Women can reportedly access the main university campus and departments only for Master’s programme, but not in their Under Graduation.

Former executive member of AMU Teachers Association and a faculty member of History at the AMU Women’s College, Shadab Bano told The Hindu that women who want to study in UG courses in Science, Arts and Commerce stream can apply only at the AMU Women’s College.

“Restricting girls’ education at UG level, which roughly means 29 courses, only to women’s college, means crippling their immense potential," she said.

However, Vice-Chancellor Lt. Gen. (retd) Zameer Uddin Shah has rejected the charges and denied any discrimination. "Our percentage of girls is 42 per cent. We are building more hostels for our girl students.”
