A 48-year-old woman suffering from end-stage heart disease, a 55-year-old man suffering from liver failure, and two people in dire need of a kidney were all given a new lease of life after the family of an 18-year-old accident victim decided to donate his organs.

The donor was Deepak Dhaketa, a newspaper vendor who was declared brain dead in Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS) in Indore on Wednesday evening. The family went through three counselling sessions, according to reports, before agreeing to donate his organs, reported The Times of India.

On Thursday, his heart and liver were transported to Delhi and Gurgaon, where two patients were in critical condition and doctors needed to conduct a transplant immediately. Local traffic police created green corridors to quickly transport both organs to the patients. Both have been reported to be stable after successful operations.

Meanwhile, both of Deepak's kidneys were donated to patients in Indore, including one in his own hospital. TOI reported that his skin and eyes have been preserved for future donation.

There have been a rise of such organ donations in Indore in the recent past.
