The Delhi police has arrested the two juveniles who allegedly shot Uber cab driver Kuldeep Thakur dead on Wednesday evening in Mundka area and fled with his car after dumping the body, reports said.

Although the police is yet to ascertain how the teenagers, aged 16 and 17 procured a firearm, a case of murder has been registered against the duo.

“We are trying to find out how and from where the minors got the firearm used in the crime," Deputy Commissioner of Police Pushpendra Kumar said.

It was 51-year-old Kuldeep Thakur’s first day as a driver with the online taxi aggregator Uber. On April 6, at around 4 pm, the two accused booked the cab to go to Hiran Kudna area in West Delhi from Najafgarh area. They were to pick up a third person on the way.

“Our thoughts are with the family of our driver-partner, the victim of this mindless violence. We have pro-actively shared details with the police to assist them with their investigation,” said Gagan Bhatia, general manager, Uber North India.

What began as a light-hearted conversation apparently turned into a heated argument. When Thakur, who was made fun of for his regional identity, retorted, one of the minors pulled out a gun and shot Thakur dead, the police said.

They then dumped Thakur’s body in a secluded area and fled with his car. To ensure that they were not caught, the two changed the number plate of the vehicle.

Villagers, upon noticing blood inside the vehicle, called up the police on Friday morning.

The duo was tracked down with the use of the software cab hailing services use for such cars.
