Virat Kohli Was The Most Mentioned Player On Social Media During T20 World Cup

Cricketer Virat Kohli was adjudged the most mentioned player followed by Dhoni, Shahid Afridi, and Chris Gayle on both Facebook and Twitter, during the T20 cricket world cup. Sana Mir of Pakistan and Jahanara Alam were the most mentioned women players of the tournament.


There were spectacular moments throughout the world cup, such as Kohli's innings against Australia and Dhoni producing a miraculous run out against Bangladesh. People posted numerous comments, pictures, videos and GIFs.

On Facebook, a record 46 million people interacted during the world cup. The event had the highest tweet per minute rate for any ICC event. A total of 8.99 million tweets were recorded.

India v Pakistan was the most popular match on both the platforms. On Facebook, 8.3 million people were engaged and Twitter registered 1.12 million tweets.However, the final saw 6.1 million people interacting on Facebook.

Facebook is pushing hard for making videos on the platform more relevant with giving a separate tab in the app for live videos. In the T20 world cup, Facebook used live videos heavily. ICC streamed over 60 press conferences on their Facebook page. And almost 20 publishers and personalities used the live videos during the event. Instagram also saw a lot of posts from players and fans alike.

Facebook had launched features such as profile picture frames and the world cup sticker pack. The profile frames were used by 17 million people whereas 13.9 million downloads were registered for the stickers.


There were 16000 tweets per minute when Kohli took India to the finals beating Australia. The second most popular moment being Brathwaite's last over heroics in the final. And amongst millions of tweets, here are the few which were retweeted the most.
