WATCH: Padma Lakshmi Just Taught Ellen DeGeneres How To Make Curd Rice

When Chennai born Padma Lakshmi moved to America at the age of 4, she felt like an 'outsider.' She changed her name to 'Angelique' in high school, just to fit in. Now, even the thought cringes her.

But, on Wednesday, when the actress, host, chef and writer made an appearance on Ellen Degeneres’ show, she sure knew how to stick to her roots. When Ellen invited her to 'cook up some fun', Padma decided to make a popular dish from her hometown-- thayir sadam also known as curd rice.

She also did a good job of teaching Ellen how to make the curd rice using her hands, despite Ellen's much disapproving look.

Ellen didn't quite like the idea of the 'lot of salt' that Padma put in the mix. But Padma approved of Ellen's mixing skills: "You're doing a good job," to which Ellen replied: "Yea, but what about spoons?"

Padma added Asafoetida, black mustard seeds, pomegranate seeds and white lentils go into the mixture and when Ellen tasted it, this was her reaction: "That's so good and so...peppery."

She then had to eat a bowlful of curd because that was "soooo spicy."

Well done, Padma. You must have made Tamilians across the world very proud!
