NEW DELHI -- Four years after it showcased the concept model of its compact SUV at the Delhi Auto Expo, Maruti Suzuki on Wednesday unveiled its first sub-four-metre sports utility vehicle, Vitara Brezza.

Though Maruti Suzuki has topped the sales charts for decades in India in the passenger cars segment, the company’s flagship models such as the Kizashi and Vitara have failed to make the desired impact in the past. The Brezza will take on Ford Ecosport and Mahindra TUV 300.

The Vitara Brezza is powered by Maruti Suzuki’s 1.3-litre DDiS 200 engine that belts out 66 KW at 4,000 rpm and 200 NM of torque at 1,750 rpm. The top-end version of the Brezza comes with 16-inch wheels while other models get 15-inch wheels. The Brezza, with its box-like design profile and an unladen ground clearance of 198 mm, stands tall.

While driver side airbag has been incorporated as a standard feature in all the variants, other safety features such as ABS and EBD come as optional features in the Brezza. The road transport ministry has given a deadline of October 2017 after which all new cars will have to mandatorily undergo front and side impact crash tests.

“A stronger high-tensile steel body not only offers superior handling, but also enhances occupant protection along with Suzuki TECT body structure,” Maruti Suzuki said in a release.

Other notable features of the Brezza include bull-horn-shaped LED light guides with projector headlamps, rear combination lamps and a cockpit style instrument cluster with mood lights, apart from SMARTPLAY infotainment.

Customers can chose the Brezza of their taste as the vehicle will be available in three themes, namely Glamour, Urban and Sporty. The Brezza is expected to hit the roads in March this year. The company is yet to announce the price.
