Salman Khan is India’s highest individual tax payer from the Hindi film industry, followed closely by Akshay Kumar and Ranbir Kapoor for the fiscal year 2015-2016, according to reports.
The Indian Express reported that the four tax payers who top India’s list are members of the Taparia family, of Famy Care Ltd, having collectively paid Rs 211 crore as advance tax. Ashutosh Taparia, joint managing director has paid Rs 75 crore, managing director Sanjeev Kumar Taparia has paid Rs 63 crore and two other members, Aruna Devi Taparia and Anjali Ashutosh Taparia have paid Rs 37 crore, and Rs 36 crore respectively.
Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan are also in the list: Shah Rukh paid an advance tax amount of Rs 14 crore, while Amitabh paid Rs 8.75 crore. Salman paid Rs 20 crore, followed by Akshay at Rs 16 crore, and then Ranbir at Rs 15 crore.
Among the lawyers who also pepper the list of 15 individuals, senior counsel Fali S Nariman and Mumbai-based attorney Janak Dwarkadas have shelled out Rs 3.8 crore and Rs 9.9 crore advance tax to the government respectively.
Advance tax is paid when an individuals total tax liability exceeds Rs 10,000 during the financial year. It is calculated after applying tax deducted at source (TDS).
