The second volume of President Pranab Mukherjee's memoir -- The Turbulent Years: 1980-96 -- is out. Not only has the Congress loyalist admitted to being "flabbergasted" by his ouster from Rajiv Gandhi's cabinet in the 80s, he has also denied aspiring to be the interim Prime Minister after Indira Gandhi's death.

In the book published by Rupa Publications, the President said getting dropped from Rajiv's Cabinet was "not even peripherally" on his mind. He also spoke about the circumstances that led to his ouster from the party in April 1986.

He rejoined the party in 1988.

Here are some black and white photographs of Mukherjee at work in the 80s. All photos are from the Government of India's Photodivision archives.
