SRINAGAR -- An Army jawan died when his service rifle went off accidentally inside a camp in Kulgam district of south Kashmir, a police official said today.

Naik Nek Ram of 18 Dogra Regiment, who was posted with 62 Rashtriya Rifles, was hit in the head by a bullet from his service rifle last evening, the official said.

He said the jawan was rushed to District Hospital Kulgam where he succumbed to injuries.

Although preliminary investigations revealed that the service rifle of the deceased jawan went off accidentally, police have started inquest proceedings under section 174 CrPC to ascertain the cause of Ram's death.
