The Samajwadi party government in Uttar Pradesh has declared that men with more than one wife will not be eligible to teach Urdu, after issuing notices for an appointment of 3,500 Urdu teachers.
According to a Times of India report, the government officials have implemented this decision to eradicate any confusion over widow pensions. The requirement to declare marital status has triggered protests from Muslims in the state, with the Muslim Personal Law Board claiming that this act is a violation of Muslims rights.
In inclusion to declaring the non-eligibility of men with two wives, the notice also says that any female candidates who are married to a man with two wives will also not qualify for the post. An education department official also said that this proviso would apply to all teachers in the government system.
Applications to supplicate the vacant positions (announced through government orders of January 5 and 8) will be accepted from January 19 onwards.
