NEW DELHI -- Revealing details of his plan to combat pollution today, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that odd-numbered cars will be allowed on Delhi roads on odd dates, and even-numbered cars will move on even dates, starting from Jan 1, for a 15-day trial period.

The rule will be enforced from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm with the exception of Sunday.

Those violating the rule will be fined Rs2000.

Earlier this month, the Aam Aadmi Party government announced that cars with odd and even registration numbers would be allowed on the roads on alternate days from Jan. 1 to bring down the pollution level.

On Thursday, Kejriwal said that his government would assess how the odd-even formula worked at the end of 15 days, and then take a call on whether to extend it.

For now, however, the plan is only for a fortnight.

Delhi is ranked the world's worst polluted city by the World Health Organisation.

On Thursday, Kejriwal said that single women drivers, emergency cars (ambulance, police vans, firetrucks), several 'VIPs' including the President and Prime Minister, will be exempt from the odd-even formula. Children up to 12 years of age can also travel with a women driver.

Kejriwal and his family will not be exempt from the rule.

It is estimated that half of the over 19 lakh registered vehicles in Delhi will be off the roads under this plan.

The Delhi government has also promised to release an app for carpools.

Last week, the Supreme Court banned the registration of new diesel vehicles with an engine capacity of more than 2000CC for three to four months.
