WATCH: Trailer For 'Jai Gangaajal', Featuring Priyanka Chopra As A Tough Cop

Priyanka Chopra Is A Female 'Singham' In Prakash Jha's 'Jai Gangaajal'

Priyanka Chopra's latest role as Kashibai in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's just-released Bajirao Mastani seems miles apart from her upcoming film, Jai Gangaajal, whose trailer was released online on Tuesday.

In this upcoming action-drama directed by Prakash Jha, Chopra plays tough cop Abha Mathur, posted in a small town called Bankepur in what appears to be Madhya Pradesh. Manav Kaul plays the resident tough guy who is drunk on his own power, while Jha, acting for the first time in a major role, plays a morally-flexible policeman who works under Mathur (addressing her as 'madam sir', as heard in the trailer several times).

The film's tone seems to be consistent with the kind of loud, politically-charged, and melodramatic films Jha is known for. As an actor, he appears to be commendably confident and natural. Chopra plays a part that has been an archetypal character in Indian cinema: the angry young, idealistic cop. The overt dialogue-baazi is a clear sign that this is a film that aims to stay faithful to its genre by largely avoiding sublety and realism.

Jai Gangaajal releases on March 4, 2016. Watch the trailer above.
